This group field project is a study of the feasibility of a socially responsible pedal power electricity-generating project carried out for PT Intraco Penta Tbk, a large public listed Indonesian company. A recommended marketing plan will be formulated to support findings and analysis if project is proven to be feasible. Because the project used an action research framework for its product development process, this project thesis uses the same perspective to assess the project for lessons learned.

PT Intraco Penta Tbk spans several industries, including construction equipment distribution, financing services, mining services, engineering and infrastructure, and most recently, power generation. In line with the Company’s stated vision to be a socially responsible local economy development enterprise, the aim of the project was to produce a commercially viable renewable energy source that would elevate its corporate image while benefitting the society in the process. The particular focus was to assist the government’s Indonesia Terang program, an initiative launched in 2016 by the government with an initial target to bring electricity to 12,659 remote and inaccessible villages where PLN (the state electricity company) services do not exist.

The group field project members identified limitations in what existing stand-alone electricity generating sources provided, and to address the unmet needs in these remote areas the group used an action research framework to,
1) Go through 2 cycles of prototype development for the pedal powered electricity generating source,

2) Carry out a feasibility study (including two field trips to remote villages),

3) Produce a marketing plan,

4) Successfully persuade the Ministry of Villages, Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration to conduct a pilot project for the prototype.
