Population of Indonesia in 1997 is about 200 million. This create a need for a "humanitarian housing" because the biggest part of the population are living in modesty. As the growth of economy spurs at 7 .82% in 1996 and predicted to be 5.46% this year due to the appreciation of US dollar against rupiah, demand for housing not likely to decrease. The Ministry of Housing (Kementrian Perumahan Rakyat) has been trying very hard to meet the demand.
Housing demand was fulfilled by private developers and by National Housing Company (perumnas). The low cost housing segment itself currently has a need of 600.000 units per annum. And for particular DKI-Jakarta, the Housing Department of DKI-Jakarta reported a current shortfall of cumulative 635.000 units.
