This dissertation discusses the implication of banking reforms in Indonesia from 1988 to 1995, to the performance of Bank Niaga and its peers. The analysis would emphasis the impacts caused by the 1988 Banking reforms, and the prudent banking measures of 1991 to the financial performance of banks. Of course there have been many of banking - deregulation and regulation issued since 1988 until now, but these two deregulations (1988 deregulation package & 1991 prudential package) have changed the banking performance significantly. By analyzing the financial performance of the bank prior to the 1988 deregulation and after the reform took place, and then the following years since 1991 prudential measures were stipulated for the banking sector, the strengths and weaknesses of the banks' strategic decision to remain as premier private banks in a more dynamic environment, are evaluated from the financial point of view. Because of the time frame of analysis is quite long (1987 -1997), the analysis will he divided into two majors period of time, which are: period of 1987 -1992 focused on the impact of banking deregulation 1988 and 1991 prudential package to Bank Niaga and its peers (Adjustment period of the banks), and period of 1992 -1997 more focused on the achievement of Bank Niaga and its peers (establishment period of the banks). Some recommendations are suggested to improve the future performance of these banks.
