PET is a relatively new packaging in Indonesia introduced in the year 2000 and the PET market is at this moment still small, at 50,000 ton/pa supplied by 5 key players with total ! production capacity at 385,000 ton/pa.
PT. Polypet Karyapersada is currently the PET market leader holding 50% market share. r To grow their PET business in the future PTPoplypet Karyapersada is challenged by " enlarging the PET market pie in Indonesia. To see the potential growth of PET there are
two factors need to be studied namely the triggers to the switching from non -PET to PET packaging materials and the decision making process to the switching within the fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies.
To this end, a focused study by direct interview was conducted on 6 (six) selected FMCG companies i.e. Unilever, Indofood, Coca Cola, Danone, Nutricia and Bintang Toedjoe.
A number of prepared questions were raised during the interview covering product and process such as trigger, initiator, pressure, decision maker and decision making process.
The main findings from the study suggested that the triggers of switching are mostly corning from the market trend, the initiators were corning from either R&D, Marketing, Purchasing & Logistics while the decision maker in all cases are Marketing. The pressures are due to safety for foods and marketing & logistics aspects for beverages. There is still lack of information on PET at the company level. No regulation or formal standardization have been established yet in Indonesia for food & beverage industry.
A number of recommendations have been drawn from this study for PT. Polypet Karyapersada that may be followed up accordingly.
