The Determinant of Sharia Banks Financial Performance in Indonesia During The Period of 2014-2018: A Financial Analysis Based on Camel Methodology

As the largest Moslem country in the world, Indonesia is the perfect place for Sharia Banking. With full support from Bank Indonesia/BI (Central Bank) and Otoritas Jasa Keuangan/OJK (Financial Authority Services), Sharia Bank in Indonesia growth in number from only 1 full flag Sharia Bank in 1992 to 14 Sharia Banks in 2019. However, the market share of Sharia Banking still below 6% of total banking industry. The present study is taken to analyse and evaluate the financial soundness of the two largest Sharia Banks in Indonesia: PT Bank Muamalat Indonesia, Tbk (BMI) and PT Bank Syariah Mandiri (BSM) for the periods of 2014 -2018. The study investigating of selected key financial ratios in accordance with CAMEL method which consist of Capital, Asset Quality, Management, Earnings and Liquidity. The result compares with the performance of the two largest Conventional Banks: PT Bank Central Asia, Tbk (BCA) and PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (BRI) to conclude the weakness point of Sharia Bank. The result shows that the performance of the two largest Sharia Bank are far below the two largest Conventional Bank. The main driver of the low performance is low asset quality, low earning and high inefficiency and at the end resulted low Return on Asset.
