In the ever changing world, every business strategy and management practice should adapt to anticipate the uncertainties. This is the basic foundation for a corporation to survive in the future -change or to be changed. Corporate missions are restated, even reformed. Status and power are altered. Structures are reorganised. Patterns of interaction are revised. Behaviors are transformed.

Based upon these changes, our group felt a strong desire to select a management issue focusing on changes. And the transformation behavior foreseen and planned by Bakrie Tosanjaya seemed to us to be the right topic to be analysed further. Accordingly, the main objective of the GFP is to observe the implementation of Transformation '97.

Bakrie Tosanjaya's Transformation Program was formulated in line with its goal to be a major contributor as a member of Bakrie Brothers Group. As a start BT decided to have Transformation 1997 which would be the basis for Transformation 2000. In Transformation 1997 BT would concentrate to transform the human behavior of its organization which then was expected to improve output of production, marketing & sales, finance & administration, and others.

The effort to pursue the vision of the company, as a thoughtful and solid venture had to be accomplished by BT. The existing condition of BT had to be improved.

The management of BT had initiated a program to realize the vision through Transformation 2000 program. Part of the transformation was implemented in 1997 which was regarded as Transformation 97. The focus of T97 was in behavior transformation of BT's human resources, originating at the top managerial level. The entire BT work force should shift from the old paradigm towards a learning organization.

To measure the result of Transformation 1997, interviews were done based on a sampling basis on all levels of the organization. Analysis and recommendation in the GFP, would discuss issues of readiness of Bakrie Tosanjaya to change, the progress of Transformation 97 program, the team who facilitated the transformation process, CEO Involvement in the program, the tools utilized in the program, senior management commitment, interviews with employees, and the effect of external business condition to the implementation of Transformation 97.
